Reminder: Digital Safety Guidelines for Councils to Share

As local councils and units use digital and online resources, such as video conferencing, to continue Scouting meetings, projects, and advancement during the COVID-19 outbreak, the National Council is providing guidance in this BSA Safety Moment that can be shared with anyone who has questions about topics such as video conferencing safety for Scouts and leaders. Note: This guidance is not comprehensive, and if it differs from the legal requirements of your state or local jurisdiction, please consult with your local council attorney.

Topics addressed for conducting online Scouting activities safely include:

  • Follow all Youth Protection policies.
  • Use business-oriented conference platforms instead of platforms with other primary purposes (such as gaming).
  • Do not record online activities/meetings.
  • Safeguard personal information.
  • Collecting personal information from youth under 13 is not recommended.

For full details, view the Safety Moment, which is available publicly on Scouting.org.

With the concerns of COVID-19 spreading, units are canceling campouts and in-person meetings, but that doesn’t mean Scouting stops.  As Scouters, we are never ones to shrink from a challenge. As long as you can provide two-deep digital leadership the program can continue!

For the next several weeks, we’re all going to be hunkered down while we wait out the preparations for the COVID wave. During this time, it’s important to think about how we can mitigate how our youth members are disrupted. More than thinking about it, we need to act! There are ways that we can deliver positive adult associations, even with the “Stay At Home” order.

Here you will find a resource hub for parents and leaders to help support Scouting at home, with stay-at-home educational activities for any Scout rank, tips for continuing to work on advancements, and kid-friendly content that connects Scouting with their daily lives. We will continue to add new content and resources to this hub regularly.
